Unfinished Business
The Executive Board of the Nevada Republican State Central Committee has set Saturday, July 26th 2008 as the official date to reconvene the Nevada State Republican Convention. The convention will be held in the same place it started, at the Peppermill Hotel and Casino in Reno, Nevada.
A record number of delegates were credentialed at the 2008 Nevada Republican Convention before it was called to recess on April 26th 2008. The convention has already passed rules, bylaws, credentials, a platform, and elected national committee members.
“We are excited about completing business and moving on towards our end goal of electing Republicans in November,” stated Chairman Sue Lowden. “Our Executive Committee has worked hard to secure a location, insurance, and the necessary security precautions for the reconvening of the convention. All credentialed delegates will receive notification of the date and location by mail.”
Nevada has 34 delegates to the Republican National Convention. State Chairman Sue Lowden, National Committeeman Joe Brown, and National Committeewoman Beverly Willard are automatic delegates to the convention which will be held September 1st through the 4th in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
EXCELLENT JOB, SUE!
I am very pleased & I can’t wait for the reconvening of the convention!

But will Sue behave any differently from her deceptive and underhanded tactics of April 26?
Ben — June 5, 2008 @ 10:10 am
Ben,
Enough is enough. Get over your paranoid self delusions. Deceptive and underhanded? Give me a break.
Bryan — June 5, 2008 @ 11:07 am
Ben,
Drop your conspiracy theory thoughts and your automatic presumption of wrong-doing at the hand of the State Party. Sue works hard on a daily basis and doesn’t need to hear crap from you.

Now maybe this time we can get things done without the childish games of shutting things down when votes don’t go the way the party leaders want them to.
I will be waiting to see if my party can work through this with some level of maturity, or do I end up tearing up my registration card and walking away.
Todd — June 5, 2008 @ 12:48 pm
I think that there is a time and place for childish behavior. Its called a playground.
If you had the responsibilities that Sue Lowden does, then would you be calling her deceptive & underhanded? Probably not. Sue, and all Party leaders answer to a lot of people.
As for why the convention was recessed, our time was up at the Peppermill. Having run MANY events, once your alloted time is up in a convention space, you cannot continue. You sign a contract ahead of time. Just because several people wanted to jam up precious time by changing rules, calling for points of clarification & order on the TINIEST things, doesn’t mean that everyone else’s time should have been wasted.
I for one was all for a mail-in ballot. It would have saved travel expenses, especially for those of us with families who wanted to take family vacation. No offense to those in the north, but I don’t think my kids will be thrilled with the idea of “family vacation” in Reno…

What you say is not true in this case. Those who disagreed with the recess asked for three more hours from the hotel and it was granted.

Mail in ballots are not allowed by our own rules. There was no way all the convention business could be conducted in one day if there were to be flag ceremonies, veterans’ ceremonies, tributes to fallen soldiers, speeches by people who aren’t presidential candidates, non-essential videos, two hour lunch, etc. This was all a tactic to run out the clock. Republicans should be irate that their time & money were used in this fashion, instead of getting down to business. The hotel made a lot of money having us there. Keeping us longer would only result in more revenue for the Peppermill. There was NOTHING on the convention schedule (Remember the pamphlet with the schedule in the tiniest type possible?)that said we had to adjourn/recess at a specific time. There was nothing said at the beginning of the day like, “We have a lot of business to conduct, so let’s get down to it as we have to be out of here by 6pm.” In light of that, I don’t think the convention was well-planned at all. If anyone can only attend one convention, please consider June 28th. EVERYONE will have a chance to participate, and you will be treated fairly whether you are for McCain, Paul, Romney, Thompson, etc. This is a democratic process, even though we are republicans.

Good job! July 26 it is. See you there.

Just read an e-mail with Zach Moyle’s reasons for going with July 26th, among them was this:
>>In addition, we needed to address the two biggest concerns over the first convention. One is security and the other is a liability policy. Both are now in place on the July 26th date so as to eliminate any concerns over the reconvene that we have received from multiple delegates over threats received at the last convention.>>
Uh, excuse me, it was you folks who turned off the lights and sound, so that we were left in the dark. Someone could have easily been hurt. You didn’t seem to have any concern for the welfare of the people left in the hall. The only “threat” I have had is the one against my ability to be one voice/one vote at the convention.

#8, thanks Cynthia, you got it just right. Please all delegates plan on the June 28th reconvene. Honestly, what is the GOP thinking with the rising airfares and July being in the middle of peak family vacation time by even suggesting that date, unless they have ulterior motives. We were promised a timely return to the convention floor….91 days is hardly timely. I also find it disengenuous to believe that the convention organizational committee could have have known that this event was likely to run overtime and long due to the imcreased numbers and energies prompted by Ron Paul supporters. Get used to change, people, the GOP as it currently exists, is about to change. Now that real “change” I can support.

#11, Yes Zac has a tremendous number of concerns…doesn’t he? Frankly, I’m concerned that the ploy is to avoid having a convention all together. I, too, like you Cynthia, felt threatened by people running up and down aisles shouting “get out, McCain people out…everyone out” followed by lights out and no mic. Just who is threatening whom? These are all delay games and tactics they are using. I am going to the reconvene on June 28th. We can do this without disenfranching anymore and living up the Rules of the GOP which I quote here: BE IT RESOLVED, That the Republican Party is the party of the open door. Ours is the party of liberty, the party of equality of opportunity for all and favoritism for none.
It is the intent and purpose of these rules to encourage and allow the broadest possible participation of all voters in Republican Party activities at all levels and to assure that the Republican Party is open and accessible to all Americans.”
Time, perhaps, for them to start living up to their own rules.

Cynthia, KC, and Anonymous;
Time for you to put your football pads or hockey equipment back on and get back on the short bus. Play time is over. Your little friend Carl Bunce is already loaded and waiting for you. You can join the rest of your special friends on June 28th in Reno. “Dee Dee Dee!”

While many of you do not agree with the Ron Paul people and their “unethical tactics”, you must admit we are passionate. This is the passion everyone should have for the presumptive candidate, but yet I have failed to see it. The Paul people stick to it and have done more for this party than I have seen in years. I believe this is more of a political statement, rather than a bunch of people trying to undermine the party. ”More security”??? I seriously doubt we are going to have violence break out. I hope that this needed security does not turn into the chairman’s personal security squad, willing to kick anyone with a dissenting voice out of the convention. We are not there to rubber-stamp. We are there to represent what we feel is best for Nevada. And if that means giving some delegates to Ron Paul, so be it!!

#17 Hear! Hear! In our State, Ron Paul won more votes at caucus than McCain. I, too, have noticed very little passion for McCain and if anything, I find the opposite to be true. It is only just that Ron Paul take a majority of the delegates to Minnesota from Nevada. Just think, Nevada will look like the forerunner of the Party in years to come. If the NV GOP is serious about getting the job done and representing the voters of Nevada, I would suggest they attend the June 28th convention where we will have a quorum.

Apologies to all, I am not the anonymous who has posted previously and I lay claim only to posts #11, #12, and #18. I do not agree nor condone the ploys of Sue Lowden and Bob Beers, over the wishes of the delegates in favor of the national RNC.

Dear Sue,
Have you completed the research necessary to find out if a reconvening of our 2008 Convention on the June 28th date would be a violation of our bylaws, Roberts Rules of Order, or Nevada Revised Statute? Please share the applicable provisions with us as soon as possible. Are you discouraging our attendance at the June 28th convention? If we do not attend, who will be there to represent John McCain at the June 28th convention? I have also heard some talk that waiting until the end of July to reconvene would be a violation of some 90 day rule? Please let us know the truth about these rumors. Thank you.

So let me get this right…everyone was mad the party didn’t immediately present a new convention date. They kept saying things like, “we just want the process to be finished!”
Now the party has provided a date with substantial time for preparation by all delegates (oh and again, the only organization that can call a reconvene recognized by the RNC) and you are still complaining?
For crying out loud, you won’t be happy until someone’s head is on a stick and Ron Paul marches around with it! This last ditch panic and effort by the RP’s to hold an ILLEGITIMATE and UNRECOGNIZED meeting of delegates is actually going to cause more harm than good. Delegates must be so confused on what to do and you’re lack of cooperation has only compounded the issue.
I hate to break it to you, but just blind anger and definace doesn’t count as leadership either. You accuse others of being blind and following like sheep, but rebellion for the sake of rebellion alone is just as awful.
Right Wing Conspiracy — June 9, 2008 @ 3:11 pm
You don’t get it. Any convention is legitimate if the majority of the delegates to the State Convention say it’s legitimate. The Nevada Revised Statutes on Election Law, Robert’s Rules of Order, the State Party Bylaws, and the American tradition of representative democracy put the ultimate authority into the hands of the delegates, not into the hands of a few party insiders.
